TROMMEL SEPARATION PHYSICS

The AXE ARM-TR 4500 is a stationary trommel screen — a rotating cylindrical drum with perforated walls that separates feed material by particle size. As the drum rotates at 6–10 rpm, material is lifted by internal flights and tumbles back down. Particles smaller than the screen aperture fall through the drum wall into an undersize collection hopper; particles larger than the aperture are conveyed along the drum's longitudinal axis by the tumbling action and discharge at the opposite end as oversize. The separation efficiency is governed by the probability that a particle of a given size will, in a single lift-and-tumble cycle, present itself to an aperture in the correct orientation to pass through. For near-cubic particles this probability is high; for flat or elongated particles (cardboard sheets, plastic film) the effective aperture size is reduced because the particle must align its smallest dimension with the hole. This is why trommels are typically deployed as the primary sizing stage — they handle heterogeneous feed well and produce a coarse separation that downstream equipment (near-infrared sorters, windshifters, manual picking stations) can refine.

APERTURE SELECTION AND STAGE CONFIGURATION

The ARM-TR 4500 is typically configured in two or three screen stages along its length, each with a different aperture size. A common MSW configuration uses a 40 mm first stage (removing fines and organic material for composting or biogas), a 100 mm second stage (recovering mid-size recyclables — bottles, cans, containers), and an open final stage (oversize rejection — large cardboard, textiles, contaminant items). For C&D waste the apertures shift to 60 mm / 150 mm to reflect the coarser feed stock. Aperture selection is a trade-off between throughput and separation sharpness. Smaller apertures increase the residence time required for undersize particles to find their way through, reducing throughput. Larger apertures increase throughput but degrade the sharpness of the cut, sending mid-size particles into the undersize stream. The ARM-TR 4500's 15 kW drum drive is sized for the rotational torque required to lift a full drum load of material at the 40 t/h nominal throughput — heavier loads would slip on the drive roller, lighter loads waste energy. Variable-speed control allows the operator to tune the residence time per material class.

SORTING LINE ARCHITECTURE

In a multi-fraction sorting line, the ARM-TR 4500 serves as the primary sizing stage immediately after the bag opener (which liberates bagged feed) and before the secondary separation stages. The undersize fraction from the trommel's first stage is typically sent to a Nihot windshifter or ballistic separator to recover organic material from heavy inerts (glass, stones). The mid-size fraction goes to a manual picking station or near-infrared sorter for container recovery. The oversize fraction is sent either to a secondary shredder (for size reduction before re-screening) or directly to a baling press such as the AXE PG-90. The trommel's stationary design (drum rotates on trunnion rollers mounted to a fixed frame) means it requires a concrete foundation and cannot be relocated without civil works. For mobile or semi-mobile applications, a vibration screen is preferred. The stationary configuration, however, allows larger drum diameters (the 4500 mm drum would be impractical on a mobile chassis) and higher throughput, and the fixed installation enables the integration of dust extraction, fire suppression, and enclosed ventilation — critical for MSW applications where odor and bioaerosol control is regulated.
